About 20 million people out of the 23 million population of this island were eligible to participate in the elections, of which more than 70 percent participated in the elections.
According to the preliminary results of the counting of votes, "William Lai Ching Te" from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the current vice president of Taiwan, has received 43.2 percent of the votes.
