Afghanistan has no representative at the ECO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
The head of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foreign Ministry in the northeast of the country announced that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was not invited to the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and said: Since the change of government in Afghanistan and the activities of the acting government of the Islamic Emirate, based on the consensus of the members and the decision of the ECO Secretariat, Afghanistan has no representative at this meeting.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Mashhad: Ahmad Masoumifar explained the programs of next week’s ECO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in this city on Monday, in a conversation with reporters, and added: In addition to the foreign ministers, ambassadors and delegations of the 10 ECO member countries, the ECO Secretary General, the Secretary General or representatives of the ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Secretary General or a representative of the D-8 Group, eight Islamic countries, and representatives of some other regional and international agreements will be present at this meeting.
According to IRNA, he said: The Council of Ministers is the most important decision-making body in ECO, and so far, there has been no record of holding a ministerial-level meeting at this level in a city other than Tehran. Although some were against holding this meeting outside the capital, with the efforts of Khorasan Razavi officials and the use of existing capacities, Mashhad was finally chosen to host this meeting.
Masoumifar added: In 1962, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey formed the Regional Development Cooperation Agreement (RCD), which later came to life in 1985 as ECO, with an economic approach and regional partners. In 1993, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, seven new members, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, were added to this regional agreement.
He pointed to the prominent regional position of this economic organization and added: "ECO member countries, with a population of half a billion and an area of more than eight million square meters, have a geopolitical and geoeconomic position, and the dominance of these countries over several international waterways and seas has made ECO countries known as a bridge of communication and the fastest and cheapest transportation route between the East and the West of the world." The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry's mission in the northeast of the country stated that the volume of Iran's trade with ECO countries is about 20 billion dollars annually and said: "The purpose of forming this regional pact is to develop trade and economic relations within the region, which is implemented through various institutions within this organization in the fields of transit and transportation, telecommunications, environment, tourism, banking and international cooperation, and shipping." Masoumifar announced the ECO's gross domestic product (GDP) at $1.8 trillion and added: "The total foreign trade of the 10 ECO members has been announced at $1.2 trillion, but the value of intra-regional trade between ECO member countries is $100 billion, most of which is in the fields of energy, plastic materials, machinery, minerals and iron and steel." While there have been numerous questions in recent days about the possibility of Afghanistan's participation in this meeting, he said: "Since the change of the republican government in Afghanistan and the activities of the Taliban caretaker government, based on the consensus of the members and the decision of the ECO Secretariat, Afghanistan has not been represented in this meeting." This is while considering Afghanistan's economy-oriented approach in controlling the Islamic Emirate and the interest of regional and neighboring countries in expanding economic cooperation, Afghanistan's participation in the meeting of foreign ministers of ECO member countries could have brought many achievements for the region.
