Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): More than 2,000 residents have been moved to temporary shelters amid increased volcanic activity in eastern Indonesia, a local official said on Tuesday.
According to Irana, citing AFP, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Risk Mitigation (PVMBG), Mount Lutobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara province has erupted several times in recent weeks. On Monday, volcanic ash erupted at a height of 1.5 km above the peak.
The agency said in a statement that it recorded another eruption from Mount Lutobi on Tuesday, but no ash clouds were observed.
Volcanic ash from recent eruptions has affected two areas near Mount Lutobi, forcing more than 2,200 residents into temporary shelters provided by local governments, an official in the eastern Flores region told AFP on Tuesday.
Indonesian authorities on Monday raised the volcano's alert level to level 2 (out of 4) and expanded the restricted zone from two kilometers to four kilometers around the crater.
According to the state-run Antara news agency, the volcanic ash also caused the France Seda airport, which is located more than 80 kilometers away, to stop its operations.
The Southeast Asian archipelago in the Pacific Ring of Fire is a region of intense volcanic and seismic activity. Last month, Mount Merapi, meaning mountain of fire, erupted on the island of Sumatra, killing 23 people.
Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
