UN Representative Visits Herat, Called for Immediate Action to Help the affected People
UN Special Representative and Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, referred to the earthquake-affected areas in Herat province as a “major disaster” during her visit.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)_Monitoring, The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed an emergency visit by their representative, Ms. Outenbawi, to the Zinda Jan district of Herat.
 
This visit comes in response to a recent earthquake that has caused significant loss of life and property damage. Ms Otunbayeva’s mission is to assess the extent of the earthquake’s impact on the province, and she stated, “United Nations humanitarian organizations were among the first to respond, assisting the affected population during this challenging time.”
 
On Saturday, a severe 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the western provinces of Afghanistan, including Herat, Badghis, Farah, and Helmand, causing a major disaster and heavy casualties in Herat province.
 
According to the latest reports, Doctors Without Borders stated that the number of earthquake-related fatalities in Herat has reached 2,445, with 2,440 injured.
 
Furthermore, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 11 villages in the Zinda Jan district of Herat province have been destroyed.
 
In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Herat province, Afghan authorities have undertaken a concerted effort to carry on with search and rescue operations.
