Afghan leader, U.S. vice president speak via video link
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani spoke with U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence in a video conference on Friday evening.

AVA- The sides emphasized on joint cooperation between the tw countries and discussed various issues including four-year security plan, development of security sector, reform plans in the area of fight against corruption, fight against terrorism and regional security.

During the conversation, Pence praised the Afghan government whom he said made good achievements in different areas in the past two years and a half, according to a statement from Ghani’s office.

He said that the U.S. supports the Afghan people and government in their quest for peace, stability and development.

For his part, President Ghani thanked the U.S. for its continued cooperation with Afghanistan in different areas and called it a good partner.

The conversation comes as the new U.S. administration led by President Donald Trump has yet to announce its strategy in Afghanistan.

Reports have suggested that there is disagreement within the U.S. administration over the future of its Afghan policy. While some have called for more troops in the country, others have opposed it.
