Mark Esper, the Secretary of Defense of the United States, confirmed that Washington is planning to cut its level in Afghanistan to a number less than 5,000.
Speaking during an interview on Saturday, Esper said detail to drawdown plans U.S. President Donald Trump announced earlier this week.
This comes as President Donald Trump on Monday that the United States planned to lower the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to about 4,000.
He made the announcement during an interview which the Axios released on Monday.
According to reports, the United States has around 8,600 troops stationed in Afghanistan who are operating both in the framework of the NATO-led train, advise and assist mission and conduct counter-terrorism operations.
