Bringing unity among Afghans is considered as the first step that needs to be discussed in order to bring lasting peace in the country.
The one-day peace conference also looks at the leading role of the Afghan government in peace talks as well as ending unfruitful foreign interference in the process. The participants see them as top priorities for directing the country toward peace and stability.
The Afghan government has always stressed the importance of Taliban’s approval for holding direct talks with Kabul, arguing attempts by other players will never end in lasting peace in the country.
Local and international efforts are underway for the Afghan peace process while the Taliban militant group has so far refused to hold any direct negotiations with the Afghan government. This is while the group has sat for several rounds of talks with other players, mainly the US.
