Afghanistan’s Ministry of Commerce and Industries announced on Wednesday that Kabul has sent a fruit cargo to India using Chabahar port in southeastern Iran for the first time.
The 570 tonnes of goods were originally shipped from Zaranj, in western Nimroz province of Afghanistan on 24 February. Flagging off the shipment, President Ashraf Ghani expressed hope that with the opening of the Chabahar route, the country’s exports to India would increase to $2 billion in the next one year.
In 2018, Afghanistan exported total goods worth $740 million to its South Asian neighbour India, with which it does not share a common boundary and has India's traditional arch-rival Pakistan in between. For Afghanistan last year, India was the largest foreign export destination.

The first delivery of Afghan goods through the international transport corridor Lapis Lazuli, which passes through Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey and further to Europe, will be held in October, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said.
