Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The Los Angeles Police Department announced that at least 10 people were killed during a group shooting in Monterey Park.
According to Reuters, a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department said: "There was a group shooting in Monterey Park late Saturday." What we do know is that the suspect is male, but it is unclear if he managed to escape. No further information is available at this time."
According to some news sources, the shooting happened around the Chinese New Year celebration in Monterey Park. Saturday marked the start of the two-day festival, one of the largest Chinese New Year events in Southern California.
Images posted on social media show injured people being carried to ambulances on stretchers and police guarding cordoned off streets around the scene of the shooting.
"Our sympathies go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring town of Monterey Park," Kenneth Mejia, a local official, tweeted. Monterey Park is about 11 kilometers away from the center of Los Angeles and about 60 thousand Asians live there.
The Los Angeles Times quoted the owner of a nearby restaurant as saying that people who took shelter on his property told him that a man with a machine gun had been seen in the area.
This is the fifth mass shooting in the United States this month.
