As soon as the plane from Islamabad landed at the airport in Madrid, the foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, was reportedly there to welcome them.
According to Albares, the Spanish government will now try to help these people assimilate, knowing that it will be difficult for them to return to Afghanistan in the near future.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that Madrid would not lose interest in the Afghans who had remained” in their country but wished to leave.
Spain had sent around 27,000 of its soldiers to Afghanistan throughout its 20-year presence, and 102 of these soldiers died.
Earlier, as many as 181 Afghans were relocated from Pakistan’s Islamabad to the Netherlands via chartered flights.
