In letter, Afghan female lawmakers urge US Congress to closely monitor peace process
Afghan female lawmakers sent a letter to the US Congress on Sunday, urging it to closely monitor the peace process which they cited concerns about.
The letter has been written by the Human Rights Civil Society and Women Affairs Commission of House of Representatives and Women Caucus of Afghanistan Parliament and is addressed to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and US Vice President Mike Pence.
The letter said that Afghanistan has many achievements in the fields of human rights, women’s rights, freedom of expression, minority right, political and civil participation of all sections of society, democratic system and a modern administrative structure.
It said that the agreement with the Taliban should not be at the cost of losing any of these values.
According to the letter, the democratic system and the republic must be irreversible, and women must play a meaningful and influential role in negotiating and decision making.
It asked US Congress members to reflect the concerns of the Afghan people about the peace talks with the Taliban during congressional hearings with relevant officials.
