Violence level in Afghanistan totally unacceptable: NATO envoy
The violence level which impacts on Afghans is totally unacceptable, NATO envoy has said.
Speaking in an interview with 1TV, Stefano Pontecorvo, NATO's Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, said that the level of violence is completely against the atmosphere that must be created of trust between the parties.
"The Taliban must reduce violence. The violence level which impacts on Afghans is totally unacceptable," he said.
Pontecorvo, however, said that "the spirit of the US-Taliban agreement is being respected, which is non attack to coalition forces and to urban centers."
On the issue of release of Taliban prisoners, Pontecorvo said that there are prisoners that cannot be released due to technical and legal issues. He said that they should not be released because of their past and the threat they pose.
Kabul is concerned that violence by Haqqani Network would continue or some Taliban may join ISIS despite peace with the Taliban.
Pontecorvo said that the Taliban would fight ISIS. He said that the Taliban and the Afghan government would play their part for peace in the country.
He praised the Afghan security forces saying it was them who brought the Taliban to talks.
He said that there was no need for regional countries to interfere in Afghanistan's internal affairs and that a stable Afghanistan would benefit them.
