UN Shares Message of Hope and Tolerance with Afghanistan on Eid Al-Fitr
The UN envoy to Afghanistan wished all citizens on the occasion of Eid and said, “We share your hopes for an Eid without conflict so every family can celebrate this auspicious and important time in peace.” The UN has been urging all parties to conflicts across the world to opt for a ceasefire while tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her message, Deborah Lyons, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), hoped for peace in the nation. “I urge all those in positions of power to do everything possible to stop the violence and to respect this time of reflection and tolerance,” Lyons said when talking about the recent spurt of violence attributed to the Taliban and ISIL. “I sincerely hope that the sense of solidarity enjoyed during Eid will continue after the festivities, ultimately ushering in a time of peace that Afghans so deeply want and so richly deserve.”
She also spoke about being especially mindful this year due to the pandemic. “This year COVID-19 presents a new challenge for the country, including events during Eid when extended families would normally gather in celebration. I encourage everyone to take the necessary preventative measures to protect yourselves, your loved ones and community.”
