A total of 9.4 million people are estimated to be in humanitarian need in 2020, up from 6.3 million in 2019, according to the UN’s Humanitarian Response Plan.
Of those in need, the UN plans to reach 7.1 million with assistance and requires $733 million to do so.
“This more ambitious plan will require sustained, increased and early funding from donors and on behalf of the people of Afghanistan, I urge continued and generous support from the international community for this multi-year plan,” said Toby Lanzer, Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan.
The plan includes humanitarian response to some of the country’s estimated four million protected internally displaced people who had previously been outside the plan, as well as more people with specific vulnerabilities such as women who are heading households, people with disabilities and those experiencing mental issues.
