"At the UNESCO's General Conference-40th Session that started on Nov. 12, 2019 at its Headquarters in Paris; Member States elected new members of the Executive Board for a four year term," the report said.
Afghanistan was also one of the candidates for holding a seat in the institution and was able to obtain a membership at the board in a competitive process as a result of a constructive series of negotiations and effective efforts of the Afghan Permanent Mission in the UNESCO and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the statement said.
"The Executive Board is one of the three main bodies of the UNESCO besides the General Conference and the Secretariat," according to the statement.
The selection is a major achievement in terms of elevating Afghanistan's national image and highlighting Afghanistan's role at the decision-making level of an important UN organization, the statement added.
