Indonesia: Death toll in Papua floods climbs to 112
The death toll from floods in eastern Indonesia climbed to 112 on Sunday, according to the national disaster management agency.
AVA- Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), said at least 94 people remain missing while another 915 people are injured, including 107 in critical condition.
Some 16,783 people have been affected by the flooding, which began on March 16. A total of 3,876 disaster victims have been relocated to over 30 safe zones, Nugroho said.
Search and rescue operations in the disaster area are ongoing.
This January, 68 people lost their lives on disaster-hit Sulawesi Island when torrential rain triggered landslides and floods.
Landslides and flooding are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoon season between October and April, when rain lashes the vast tropical archipelago.
