MPs call Civilian Casualties “Shocking”
Some members of the Wolesi Jirga, the Lower House of Parliament, on Saturday said that a sharp rise in civilian casualties in military operations and airstrikes of Afghan and foreign forces is “shocking”.
AVA- The MPs called on Afghan National Defense and Security Forces to be more careful while conducting operations against anti-government armed groups to prevent civilian casualties.
“I do not know why they bomb innocent people while they know the whereabouts of Taliban and Daesh hideouts,” said Habiba Sadat, an MP.
“Nangarhar, Logar, Kapisa, Maidan Wardak and Helmand have witnessed civilian casualties in the last few days and unfortunately 33 people including women and children were killed in Helmand two days ago,” MP Obaidullah Barikzai said.
This comes after the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Friday confirmed that 23 civilians were killed and three others were wounded in an airstrike in Garmsir district in Helmand.
Meanwhile, the lawmakers expressed their concerns over a sharp rise in casualties among the Afghan forces.
“They should seriously pay attention on protecting lives of civilians, women and children,” said Amir Khan Yar, second deputy speaker of parliament.
“Civilian and security forces casualties have changed into a main problem for Afghanistan and the Afghan government. The level of violence has not deescalated despite that winter has almost arrived,” said Abdul Rahim Rahin, an MP.
