Journalists among 41 dead 89 wounded in Kabul suicide attack

Forty One people including a journalist  were killed in a suicide attack in the Pul-i-Sokhta neighbourhood of Kabul on Thursday morning, officials said.

Dozens of people, including few media representatives and a number of civilians among them, were wounded in the assault on Tebyan Centre, which also houses the Afghan Voice news agency.

Nasrat Rahimi, deputy spokesman for the Minister of Interior,   told the explosion took place at 10:30am . He said 40 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 89 others wounded in the attack on Tebyan Center.  .

Public health officials said five of the injured were in critical condition. The attack took place at about 10.30am when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the entrance to the socio-cultural entity.

Ministry of Interior spokesman Najib Danish said preliminary reports indicated the explosion in the 6th police district was triggered by a suicide bomber.

Mujib Khilwatgar, CEO of the Nai, a media advocacy group, said the Afghan Voice news agency was the target of the attack that caused many casualties. However, he did not give specific figures.

Meanwile, the Islamic State militant group -- also known as Daesh -- claimed responsibility for the latest attack in the nation's capital. The assault happened near an office of the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid denied the group's involvement in the attack on the pro-Iran cultural centre, where many people had gathered to mark the Soviet invasion of the country..
