UN chief welcomes Egypt presidential election results
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the official results of Egypt’s presidential election and congratulated President-elect Mohamed Morsi.

“The secretary general commends the Egyptian people for the peaceful atmosphere in which these elections were held,” Ban's spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday.

Morsi gained 51.73 percent in last week's runoff vote, defeating former premier Ahmed Shafiq, who won about 48 percent.
Mursi fulfilled his pledge and left the Muslim Brotherhood Islamist group after the election results were announced.

Following the victory, Mursi delivered a televised speech calling for national unity and saying Cairo will fulfill all commitments it undertook.

Ban’s spokesperson also said Ban “congratulates Dr. Mohamed Morsi on his election and trusts that the president-elect will spare no effort in ensuring the people of Egypt realize their aspirations for greater democracy, the promotion of human rights, and a more prosperous and stable Egypt for all of its citizens.”

The vote was the first presidential election since the overthrow of the Hosni Mubarak regime amid popular protests in January 2011. It is seen by many as an important element of the country's democratic development.(Ria Novosti)
