Armed attack on Chinese citizens in Pakistan
The media reported that two Chinese citizens were injured after a security guard opened fire at a garment factory in Karachi, Pakistan.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to Reuters, Pakistani police and hospital officials announced that in the latest violent actions, two Chinese citizens were shot today (Tuesday) in Karachi, the commercial center of this country.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the shooting and the details have not been officially confirmed.
A senior Pakistani police official confirmed the injuries of two Chinese nationals but did not provide further details.
An anonymous police official told Reuters that the assailant's guard has not yet been arrested and it is difficult to determine his motive. The spokesperson of the hospital where these two people were taken for treatment said that the condition of one of them is critical.
China has stepped up calls for greater security for its citizens in Pakistan, and its ambassador told a public gathering in Islamabad last month that an increase in the number of deadly attacks was unacceptable. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said that Islamabad is fully committed to ensuring the security of Chinese citizens, projects and institutions.
The decades-long conflicts in the southwestern provinces of Pakistan's Balochistan have caused numerous attacks against Chinese interests and citizens. The region is home to the deep-water port of Gwadar, which was built by Beijing as part of a $65 billion investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor under China's Belt and Road Initiative.
