UN Human Rights Expert: Gaza Faces ‘Deliberate Starvation’
The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health Tlaleng Mofokeng, asserted that Gaza is confronting "deliberate starvation, not famine," referring to the Israeli regime’s use of starvation as a method of warfare in the Gaza Strip.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Monitoring: Emphasizing the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, Mofokeng, an independent UN human rights expert, responded to a warning from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the imminent threat of famine in Gaza.
Guterres, in a report submitted to UNSC members, highlighted the looming crisis of widespread famine in the enclave, as reported by Al Jazeera Arabic's Rami Ayari from the UN.
The report, obtained by Al Jazeera, not only emphasizes the potential famine but also raises concerns about a looming public health catastrophe. Guterres outlined the rapid spread of infectious diseases within overcrowded shelters characterized by dire sanitary conditions, including sewage flooding, painting an alarming picture of the situation.
The grim statistics underscore the severity of the ongoing crisis, with Israeli attacks in Gaza resulting in the loss of at least 22,722 lives and leaving 58,166 individuals wounded since October 7. This report arrives subsequent to the UNSC's adoption of a resolution on December 22, urging increased aid delivery to Gaza in an effort to address the escalating humanitarian crisis./Tasnim News
