UNESCO announced 2023 as the deadliest year for journalists in war-torn countries
In its annual assessment of journalists, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Center (UNESCO) announced 2023 as the deadliest year for journalists in war-torn countries and said that 38 journalists were killed this year.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The United Nations today (Wednesday, December 20) in a statement quoted by UNESCO wrote that the number of journalists killed in war zones has doubled compared to the last three years.
 
Based on the findings of this institution, only in the last quarter of this year, 27 journalists have been killed in war zones.
 
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said: "I pay tribute to all these media professionals and renew my call to all stakeholders to mobilize the necessary means to guarantee the protection of journalists as civilians, as stipulated in international law.
 
According to this assessment, a large number of these journalists and media workers have been killed in the last three months following the war between the Zionist regime and Hamas in Gaza.
 
Since October 7, 19 cases of murder of journalists and media workers have been recorded in Palestine, three cases in Lebanon and two cases in the occupied Palestinian territories.
 
During this period, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Syria and Ukraine have each witnessed the murder of at least two journalists and media workers.
 
The number of journalists killed last year was 28, and 20 in 2021.
 
However, during this year, there were other threats against journalists, including physical attacks, arrests, confiscation of equipment, or denial of access to reporting sites.
 
According to this assessment, a number of journalists have been forced to leave their duties due to security threats and in some cases have sought refuge in other countries.
 
Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists had announced the number of journalists killed in Gaza at 40 about 40 days ago.
