Guterres: 70% of Afghans Need Humanitarian Aid
At the 78th session of the UN General Assembly commenced with a keynote speech by Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)_Monitoring, In his address, Guterres underscored the global challenges and threats to democracy, urging nations to uphold their commitments as per the UN Charter to ensure peace.
 
Guterres highlighted the dire situation in Afghanistan, stating that 70% of its citizens are in need of humanitarian aid. He appealed to the global community to focus their attention on vulnerable regions like Afghanistan and provide substantial assistance.
 
The World Food Program had previously warned about its potential withdrawal from Afghanistan due to funding shortages.
 
Meanwhile, countries including Russia have criticized the UN’s distribution of humanitarian aid, alleging most of the assistance goes to Ukraine while other countries in need are neglected.
 
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has appealed for the lifting of sanctions to alleviate the country’s economic issues. This comes as the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, is participated from leaders and representatives of approximately 190 countries, with notable absences from Russia, China, and India.
