At least 73 people have died after a massive fire broke out in a five-story apartment building in central Johannesburg, South Africa, which was home to homeless people. Local authorities say the number of victims may increase.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): A multi-storey building caught fire in the commercial and central area of Johannesburg, which is one of the most important cities in South Africa, this morning, Thursday, (August 31).
Robert Moladzi, the spokesperson of the Johannesburg emergency department, said that at least 43 people were injured and 73 people were killed in this incident. According to this local official, this statistic includes only those killed whose bodies were found and the number of victims is increasing.
By publishing a post on X social network with the old name of Twitter, Moladzi wrote that the search for the bodies of the dead and the rescue of the survivors is still ongoing.
The spokesman of the Johannesburg emergency department also announced that a child's body was also found among the bodies of the dead. The injured were taken to medical centers and received medical care.
According to Moladzi, the repair was actually an "informal settlement" where homeless people lived without any formal contracts. According to him, this problem has made the search operation more difficult for the rescue forces.
