Afghan govt rejects delay in April 2019 presidential elections

Presidential spokesman Haroon Chakhansuri said in his twitter account that continuity in a democratic process was a must and any other proposal then the will of Afghans which was outlined in our constitution not simply acceptable.
Dr. Fazel Fazly, presidential adviser, also said the Afghan government’s commitments to holding the 2019 presidential vote is unwavering, as dictated by the country’s constitution, “We will stick to the election date announced by the IEC and follow the timeline once determined.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is considering pushing the Afghan government to postpone an April 2019 presidential election while it tries to reach a peace deal with the Taliban to end a 17-year war, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Journal cited unnamed source, some American officials worried the irregularities and protected political turmoil that routinely accompany Afghan voting could paralyze or destroy any peace process US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is able to launch.
The Trump administration launched direct talks with the Taliban earlier this year as US military efforts to blunt insurgent advances faltered, and Khalilzad is expected to meet next week with Taliban leaders in Doha, Qatar, the news outlet added.
In connection with an election postponement, one option being discussed is a conference similar to one held in Bonn, Germany in 2001 that put together a post-Taliban administration in Kabul.
This time, however, the Taliban would be represented at the table; Khalilzad played a key role in the 2001 Bonn conference, the news outlet noted.
