Two Afghan civilians were killed and four others wounded as a tractor carrying villagers struck by a roadside bomb in Taliban former bastion Marja district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, an official said Sunday.

"A tractor of civilians ran over a mine in Saifon area of Marja district on Saturday afternoon. As a result, two civilians were killed and four others, including women and children, got wounded," Police Chief of Marja district Ghulam Sakhi told Xinhua.

However, he did not point fighter at any particular groups or individuals.

Often, Taliban militants fighting Afghan government and NATO- led troops plant mines on roads to target security forces, which in many cases claim the lives of civilians.

Over 15,000 Afghan and NATO-led forces following a massive operation launched in mid February took the control of Marja from Taliban militants.

Notorious for growing poppy and militancy in south Afghanistan, Helmand province has been regarded as the stronghold of Taliban militants in the militancy-hit country.
