The Future of Economic Diplomacy between Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan
Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan have extensive potential for regional cooperation due to their geographical location and historical, cultural, and economic ties. Although Afghanistan is a landlocked country and requires extensive cooperation with its neighbors to access global markets, it is also located in the heart of Asia and is considered an important bridge between Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and China.
This strategic location allows Afghanistan to play a role as an important gateway for trade, transit, energy, and regional cooperation.
Iran, through its strategic ports, is a bridge between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf, and Turkmenistan is one of the largest exporters of natural gas in the region, which is of particular importance in the energy sector.
Strengthening economic diplomacy between these countries can lead to economic growth and regional stability by facilitating trade, reducing customs barriers, and expanding joint infrastructure projects. The Khaf-Herat railway, the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan gas pipeline, and the development of Chabahar Port are successful examples of this cooperation.
To strengthen this cooperation, it is necessary to hold a trilateral scientific and research seminar titled “The Future of Economic Diplomacy between Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan.”
This meeting should review the history of economic cooperation, joint infrastructure and trade projects, natural resources, investment opportunities, trade routes, and the role of Chabahar Port and the Lapis Lazuli Corridor.
In addition, trade agreements, tariff barriers, banking restrictions, sanctions, and challenges in financial transactions should also be examined. Also, opportunities for gas and electricity exports and imports, expanding trade and investment, and strategies for strengthening economic cooperation should be on the agenda of this meeting.
Providing practical suggestions for governments and the private sector, establishing free trade zones, developing joint financial mechanisms, and reducing tariffs are measures that can further expand economic relations between these three countries.
Herat, which is considered the economic hub of Afghanistan and, in addition to bordering Iran and Turkmenistan, has deep historical similarities with Mashhad and Marw, will soon, God willing, host this scientific and research seminar.
