Up to 33 Taliban insurgents have been killed in military operations carried out by the Afghan force and NATO-led coalition troops within the past 24 hours, the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Sunday morning.

"Afghan police, army and coalition forces launched 10 joint cleanup operations in Kabul, Laghman, Parwan, Helmand, Uruzgan and Farah provinces, killing 33 armed Taliban insurgents over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement.

Six other insurgents were injured and nine suspects were captured by joint forces during the raids, the statement added.

The joint forces also found and seized weapons, the statement said, without saying if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

In another development, eight Taliban militants were killed when a unit of special operation force of army and coalition troop launched an operation in Bati Kot district of eastern Nangarhar province Saturday night, a spokesman for provincial government, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told Xinhua on Sunday.

Four other militants were killed when their anti-tank mine went off prematurely in Jani Khil district of neighbouring Pakitka province, the ministry's statement said.

Afghan forces and some 130,000 NATO-led coalition troops have intensified cleanup operations against insurgents recently. Records kept by Xinhua, based on figures released by Interior Ministry, reveal that around 430 insurgents have been killed, 130 wounded and over 450 others detained since May 1 by joint forces.

However, the militants in retaliation responded by carrying out suicide attacks and roadside bombings.

Taliban carried out a suicide bombing in eastern Kapisa province, killing four French soldiers with the NATO-led coalition and injuring eight others including three Afghan civilians on Saturday morning. (Xinhua)
