The impact of facebook on Afghan society

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), International Service , 23 Apr 2012 - 15:01

Before to begin this reformatory piece of writing, let’s have a bird’s eye view on Facebook being used worldwide, particularly here in Afghanistan. The technology of Facebook got access to many computers in the last few years in almost all major cities of Afghanistan where communication is comparatively easier.

People and youth in particular, became interested in this technology as it is a source of finding friends inside and outside the country. Since then, the popularity of Facebook increased to the extent that it became a part and parcel of almost every computer of majority youth now-a-days, Khaama Press reported.
Despite the innovation and the revolution in the field of networking Facebook has brought, the disadvantages of over using Facebook should also be taken into account, however, face book has some disadvantages besides its advantages but as I think, it has more disadvantages as compare to its advantages for the majority of Afghan youth who are illiterate and are unable to browse Facebook properly. A literate person uses Facebook just for his needs and not more than it as he knows that over usage of Facebook waste ones time and can also cause physical strains.

The biggest disadvantage of Facebook is that it can be proved a threat to one’s life as it was reported some time ago that a mother killed her infant because it was crying in hunger while she was browsing Facebook. I have came across almost similar incident here when one of my friends busy in his mobile phone Facebook while driving a car collided his car with another car that resulted in the injury of three persons.

This incident compelled me to write a precautionary note for my fellow youth. On the other hand, Facebook has many merits such as a fastest and free medium of communication, the best source for finding old friends, sharing of feelings, videos, photos, views, chatting, cheap medium for promotional materials and getting valuable information, but our youth are unable yet to avail themselves of these benefits properly. They use Facebook just for entertainment and gossip purposes.

Many people make fake profiles with their names changed in order to deceive or harass others. This is more common against girls where people simply make a fake profile and start harassing them. Similarly, Facebook is too much addicting which often kills our valuable time. Using Facebook for our need is not bad but when we waste most of your valuable time than it becomes bad. Students who are addicted to Facebook often perform poorly in exams.
