NATO says a US-led soldier has died in the troubled eastern Afghanistan, taking the death toll of foreign troops in the country to at least 87 in 2012.

The Western military alliance said in a statement that the soldier died of non-combat related injuries in the country's east on Saturday Press TV reported.

"An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died as a result of a non-battle related injury in eastern Afghanistan today," the statement read.

NATO did not provide the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.

According to official figures released by the website icasualties.org, the latest death brings to 2934 the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the Asian country in 2001.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

The security situation has been deteriorating across Afghanistan over the past few years.

Violence has also spread from Afghanistan's volatile south to relatively peaceful areas over the course of the past year, despite the presence of some 130,000 foreign troops in the country.
