Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to Asia News Channel, Thailand announced today (Monday, November 10) that it has suspended the implementation of the peace deal with Cambodia after a landmine explosion injured two of its soldiers near the border.
The agreement, which was signed under the supervision of US President Donald Trump, was supposed to ensure a permanent end to hostilities. In July, border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia killed at least 43 people and displaced more than 300,000 civilians on both sides.
The Royal Thai Army said in a statement that a mine explosion in Sisaket province severely injured one soldier's leg, while pressure from the explosion caused chest pain in another soldier.
A Thai government spokesman said Bangkok would stop “pursuing the joint declaration.” The joint declaration is an agreement signed with Cambodia, months after the two sides agreed to a ceasefire in Kuala Lumpur in late October.
The next steps planned to implement the agreement included the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained in Thailand.
“We thought the security threat had decreased, but in fact it has not,” Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnwirakul told a news conference.
Cambodian officials did not immediately comment on the incident, but have previously denied accusations that Thailand planted landmines along the border.
Cambodia’s defense ministry said in a statement on Monday that it was “unwaveringly committed” to peace. The ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia has generally held since July 29.
But the two countries have accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Analysts say reaching a comprehensive peace agreement that resolves the territorial dispute between the two countries at the core of the conflict remains elusive.
