Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): A boat carrying Rohingya migrants from Myanmar sank in the waters off the Malaysian-Thai border. So far, Malaysian coastguards have rescued 13 people and pulled seven bodies from the water.
In contrast, Thai authorities said they had found four more bodies during search and rescue operations.
According to Azizi, the chief of the Malaysian Kedah state police, the boat was carrying about 90 illegal migrants and sank on November 7 in the northern waters between the Thai island of Taro Tao and the Malaysian island of Langkawi.
Malaysian Kedah state police officials also said that the boat that was involved in the accident was carrying about 100 illegal migrants. Initial investigations indicate that the group of migrants numbered around 300 and that after reaching the maritime area between Malaysia and Thailand, they split into three boats and attempted to illegally enter Malaysia. One of the boats capsized and the other two boats have not yet been found.
Malaysian maritime authorities stressed that search and rescue operations were continuing.
The Rohingya are a Muslim people who live in Rakhine State in western Myanmar. Due to pressure and persecution by the Myanmar government against the country's Muslims, the Rohingya people are often forced to migrate.
