Strong earthquake in southern Philippines; tsunami warning issued, two dead, extensive damage reported
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake shook the southern Philippines on Friday morning, prompting a tsunami warning and the evacuation of thousands of residents from coastal areas. Local authorities confirmed that the event left two dead, dozens injured and several buildings destroyed.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: According to international sources, at around 8:30 am on Friday (October 10, 2025), a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the waters near the city of Manay in Davao Oriental province, located in the southern Philippines.

The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at a depth of about 20 kilometers and its tremors were felt in several southern provinces, including Davao, Surabaya and Mindanao.

The Philippine Geological Survey (Philippine Meteorology and Geophysics Agency) said the quake sent residents fleeing to the roads, and that strong aftershocks were still possible.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also warned that waves of 1 to 3 meters could hit the eastern coast of the Philippines.
Following the warning, thousands of people were evacuated from coastal areas to higher ground.

At least two people were killed and several others were injured in the earthquake, Reuters reported, citing local officials.

Some residential buildings, schools and small hospitals in coastal towns were also damaged.

According to Philippine authorities, power and telecommunications services were cut in a number of areas and rescue teams were dispatched to assess the damage.

About 50 students were reportedly taken to hospitals for minor injuries and shock from the tremors.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, a tsunami warning was issued for the northern regions of Sulawesi and Papua, but the risk was reduced after a few hours and the warnings were canceled.

Light waves up to half a meter high were seen on some beaches.

The President of the Philippines has ordered all government agencies in the southern regions to be on full alert to provide assistance.

According to natural experts, the Philippines' geographical location on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" has made the country constantly exposed to strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Observers say that although the government's rapid response and earthquake warning system prevented widespread casualties, the vulnerability of urban infrastructure remains a serious concern.

Studies show that although the intensity of the tsunami was less than expected, the occurrence of aftershocks in the coming days could pose a new challenge for local authorities.

According to experts, strengthening relief systems and public education in coastal areas of Southeast Asia is crucial to reducing casualties in such events.
