UN Secretary-General: I am personally convinced that Iran is not seeking to build nuclear weapons
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a meeting with the Iranian President: I am personally convinced that Iran is not seeking to build nuclear weapons and that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful.
He added: “I believe that your intention and goal is not to build nuclear weapons and that having a peaceful nuclear program is your right and I recognize it.”
He also expressed concern about the failure to activate the trigger and snapback mechanisms, adding that he had called for greater cooperation with Iran in contact with European officials who are parties to the JCPOA.
Iranian President Masoud Pazeshkian emphasized Iran’s pacifist stance in the meeting, saying: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always sought peace and tranquility, and it was the Zionist regime that imposed war on us.”
He appreciated Guterres for his stance on the Zionist regime’s crimes against the Palestinians and the attack on Iran, but called for more explicit stances and more practical measures by the United Nations against regional aggression.
The Iranian President complained about the performance of the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying: “Iran was under the most stringent inspection system of the Agency, but this organization did not even refuse to condemn the Zionist regime’s attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.”
Referring to the approval of the law suspending cooperation with the Agency in the Iranian parliament, he emphasized that the decision on continuing cooperation has been left to the Supreme National Security Council and that Iran continues to seek diplomatic engagement and resolution of nuclear issues.
