Kabul calls for resumption of Turkish environmental projects
The National Environmental Protection Agency, in a meeting with the Turkish ambassador in Kabul, has called for the resumption of Turkey’s suspended environmental projects, provision of participation in the COP-30 meeting, and assistance in the field of environmental education and equipment.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The press office of the National Environmental Protection Agency announced in a press release that Maulvi Mati-ul-Haq Khalis, the director general of the agency, met with Cenk Unal, the ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Kabul.

In this meeting, Mr. Khalis asked the Turkish ambassador to provide his country with the opportunity for the Afghan delegation to participate in the International Climate Change Conference (COP-30), which is scheduled to be held in Brazil next year.

He also called for the resumption of Turkish environmental projects in Afghanistan, which have been suspended due to political and security developments in recent years. In addition, the head of the agency has requested Ankara to cooperate with the National Environmental Protection Agency in providing environmental equipment, training human resources, and sharing technical experiences.

During the meeting, the Turkish ambassador also emphasized his country’s continued support for Afghanistan in the environmental sector and assured that they would continue to cooperate in this area.

In the years before the recent political developments, Turkey was active in a number of provinces of the country in the form of technical and environmental cooperation projects. These projects were mainly implemented in the fields of forest restoration, water resource management, environmental education, and installation of water treatment systems in vulnerable areas.

Turkey is also an active country in international environmental forums and participates extensively in the annual UN meetings on climate change.

According to climate experts, given the country's severe environmental vulnerability, increasing air pollution, drought, soil erosion, and water shortages, resuming environmental projects is of great importance. Cooperation from countries like Turkey can be a way for Afghanistan to gradually return to international environmental engagement, both technically and politically. At the same time, strengthening domestic capacities in the National Environmental Protection Agency and attracting support from international institutions seem essential to confronting climate crises.
