North Korea confirms troop deployment to Russia, hails
North Korea confirmed for the first time on Monday that it had sent troops to fight for Russia in the war in Ukraine under orders from leader Kim Jong Un and that it had helped regain control of Russian territory occupied by Ukraine.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Monitoring: The state-run KCNA news agency, citing the North’s ruling party, said the victorious end of the battle to liberate Russia’s Kursk region demonstrated “the highest level of strategic and lasting military friendship” between North Korea and Russia.
“Those who fought for justice are all heroes and representatives of the honor of the motherland,” KCNA quoted Kim Jong UN as saying.
North Korea “considers it an honor to have an alliance with such a powerful country as the Russian Federation,” KCNA said. The U.S. State Department called for an end to North Korea’s deployment in Russia and any Russian support in return, adding that Russia had violated U.N. Security Council resolutions by training North Korean soldiers.
A State Department spokesman told Reuters that countries like North Korea, whose support “has perpetuated the Russo-Ukrainian war,” bear responsibility for it.
South Korea said Monday’s confirmation of the troop deployment was “an admission of criminality,” condemning North Korea for its “inhumane and immoral” decision to send its young men into battle to support its regime. The timing of the confirmation, after more than six months of silence, and highlighting the sacrifices of North Korean troops “at the cost of blood,” was timely, one analyst said, in order to bolster Kim’s cooperation with Putin as equals.
“It is now necessary for the leaders of North Korea and Russia to make a diplomatic show of commitment to stronger ties,” said Hongmin of the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, “preparing” for the summit in Russia.
Ukrainian officials have said North Korea has deployed a total of 14,000 troops, including 3,000 reinforcements to replace its losses. Lacking armored vehicles and experience in drone warfare, they suffered heavy casualties but adapted quickly.
South Korean officials have said North Korea has also supplied weapons including artillery ammunition and ballistic missiles. Russia confirmed for the first time on Saturday that North Korean soldiers fought alongside Russians at Kursk./Reuters
