Israeli delegation visits Cairo to discuss Gaza ceasefire

4 Dec 2024 - 9:50

Arab media reported that an Israeli delegation has visited Cairo to discuss the prisoner exchange agreement and the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Despite the news of progress in Cairo's negotiations with Hamas, especially regarding the agreement on a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of several Israeli prisoners in exchange for the rapid entry of aid into the Gaza Strip in the coming days, the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that things are not going well and are accompanied by obstacles regarding the Palestinian prisoners who are to be released during the prisoner exchange.

In this regard, Israeli officials point to "internal challenges" that may prevent the release of some Palestinian prisoners in the first phase, while insisting on the immediate handover of some of their prisoners on the first day of the ceasefire.
According to the report, an Israeli delegation is expected to travel to Cairo in the coming days to discuss further details, especially regarding the first days of the ceasefire and giving the Palestinian resistance the opportunity to specify the names of its living prisoners.
An Egyptian official told Al-Akhbar that Cairo expects an opening to be reached soon, but at the same time it may be accompanied by a "surprise" from Israel, especially regarding Palestinian prisoners.
Referring to Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati's statements yesterday about the need for an Israeli withdrawal from the Philadelphia axis, he said that this is part of the continuous political pressure on Tel Aviv in this context.
Cairo hopes that the Rafah crossing will be opened quickly in the coming days in coordination with the American side.
One of the leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Musa Abu Marzouk, had announced on Saturday before a delegation from the movement traveled to Egypt to review the Gaza war file and try to reach a ceasefire.
Hamas has repeatedly stated that it welcomes any effort to end the war against the Gaza Strip in accordance with the legitimate demands of the Palestinian resistance, and the legitimate demands of the resistance include the withdrawal of the occupying army from the territory of the Gaza Strip, a complete cessation of the war, the entry of reconstruction and relief supplies to the people, and a respectable agreement for the exchange of prisoners.
