Adam Abdel-Mawli, UN Resident Coordinator for Syria, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the city of Aleppo, located in northwestern Syria.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Adam Abdel-Mawli, UN Resident Coordinator for Syria, noted that the recent escalation of hostilities and aggression in Aleppo, which began on November 27, has resulted in the deaths of many civilians, including children and women, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and the suspension of basic services.
According to a report by Sky News Arabic, Abdel-Mawli added that this escalation of tensions and hostilities has occurred at a time when countless people who had previously been displaced have been forced to flee their homes and livelihoods again.
The UN official called on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease aggressive operations and prioritize the protection of civilians, including aid workers.
He stressed that the Syrian people should not suffer any more, and called for a platform for dialogue between the parties.
The UN Resident Coordinator for Syria also stressed that the Syrian crisis remains one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.
Abdelmouli, while warning that the recent violence has claimed more lives and that many people are now in urgent need of assistance, stated: “Before the arrival of more than half a million refugees and asylum seekers from Lebanon since last September, more than 16 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance.”
He stressed that the humanitarian community is steadfast in its commitment to providing life-saving assistance to affected communities, and that members of the humanitarian teams in Syria are committed to remaining and providing vital humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.
The UN official concluded by calling for adherence to international law and human rights law.
Last Wednesday, hours after the announcement of a ceasefire between Hezbollah and the Israeli regime, news of a large-scale operation by the terrorist group "Tahrir al-Sham" in northwestern Syria and the province of Aleppo was released.
The Tahrir al-Sham group, previously known as the Nusra Front, began a ground advance towards the Syrian army's deployment centers in western Aleppo in recent days. In addition to "Tahrir al-Sham", the names of several other terrorist groups allied with these terrorists are also seen among the attackers in Aleppo. In addition, some reports indicate that the so-called "Syrian National Army" supported by Turkey is also participating in the battles alongside the Tahrir al-Sham group.
According to ISNA, in response to these attacks, the Syrian army, supported by the Russian air force, carried out large-scale airstrikes on terrorist positions and targeted many of their fortifications. Some reports indicate that the Syrian army is preparing to counter the terrorists' advance and defend its front lines in Aleppo. These battles have intensified and are still ongoing, especially in the western suburbs of Aleppo and strategic areas close to the Turkish borders.
