On Sunday, December 24, 2020, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi issued a decree appointing Alireza Bigdali as the new head of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Kabul.
Bigdali previously served as the deputy consular and parliamentary deputy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Cyprus, and the country’s charge d’affaires in Kazakhstan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political relations, a master’s degree in regional studies, and a doctorate in international relations.
Meanwhile, Maulvi Amir Khan Mottaqi, the acting minister of foreign affairs of the Islamic Emirate, announced in a meeting with Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the special representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran for Afghanistan, at the ministry’s headquarters that they are working with the new head of the Iranian embassy in Kabul to expand bilateral relations.
However, based on another change, news sources in Iran announced that the post of special representative of the Iranian presidency for Afghanistan has been eliminated, and the country’s special representative will continue to work as Iran’s special representative for Afghan affairs under the supervision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
With this change, Mr. Kazemi Qomi's mission as the acting head of the Iranian embassy in Kabul has ended, but according to the announcement of the Iranian embassy in Kabul in the press release of the meeting with the Chinese special representative, his activities as the country's special representative for Afghan affairs continue to this day, and no new decision has been announced by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the change of the country's special representative and the ministry's position in Afghan affairs.
