Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Amir Saeed Iravani, the ambassador and permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, stated in a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council regarding the accusations by the US and UK against Iran: The US and UK cannot absolve themselves of responsibility while they are paving the way for the crimes of the Israeli regime. Their unconditional support for the Israeli regime fuels the continuation of the conflicts and weakens the Security Council’s mission to maintain international peace and security.
The text of Iravan’s letter is as follows:
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
This letter is sent in response to the baseless accusations raised by the representatives of the United States and the United Kingdom at the open meeting of the United Nations Security Council on November 18, 2024, under the agenda item “The situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine.” At this meeting, the representative of the United States, in coordination with the Israeli regime, made a desperate attempt to deflect responsibility for their joint complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocidal war in Gaza and its war crimes in Lebanon by accusing Iran of destabilizing the region in order to advance its own political agenda. These accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran are categorically rejected.
The United States, through its unconditional political, military, and financial support for the Israeli regime, bears direct responsibility for the instability of the region and the crimes committed against civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. It is an undeniable fact that the killing of civilians, the destruction and the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon, with US-made weapons and its unwavering support, is taking place while the repeated US vetoes of ceasefire resolutions in the Security Council have shielded the Israeli regime from accountability. Instead of promoting peace and security, the United States has paralyzed the Security Council and given the Israeli regime permission to continue its aggression and killing with complete impunity, under the pretext of self-defense, as demonstrated by the recent US veto of the ceasefire resolution.
Similarly, we strongly reject the baseless accusations made by the British Foreign Secretary at this meeting, who accused Iran of destabilizing the region. These baseless allegations are a blatant attempt to cover up Britain’s historical and ongoing role in creating instability and chaos in the region. The British colonial imposition of the Mandate of Palestine, coupled with the calculated political engineering aimed at depriving the Palestinian people of their rights, is the foundation of the injustices and atrocities we witness today.
Britain played a central role in the establishment of the usurping Israeli regime and is directly complicit in the displacement, suffering, and oppression of the Palestinian people. The legacy of division and dispossession continues, exacerbated by Britain’s support for the Israeli regime’s violations of international law and its continued provision of advanced weapons to the regime.
The United States and Britain cannot, therefore, absolve themselves of responsibility while enabling the crimes of the Israeli regime. Their unconditional support for the Israeli regime perpetuates the conflict and undermines the Security Council’s mandate to maintain international peace and security.
It also categorically rejects similar accusations made by representatives of these two countries against Iran regarding the conflict in Ukraine, which were raised on the same day in a public meeting of the Security Council under the agenda of "Maintaining international peace and security in Ukraine."
