Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Reuters reported that Javedullah Mehsud, a local official, said that the casualties in the attack have increased to 40 people, including eight women. According to him, 29 others are being treated in hospital, of whom 9 are in critical condition. According to officials, most of the dead are Shiites, but a number of Pakistani Sunni citizens are also among the martyrs.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Parachinar district, on Pakistan’s northwestern border with Afghanistan, has repeatedly witnessed violence between Shiites and Sunnis over land and power, with Shiites in the area particularly under threat from extremists who hold views similar to ISIS.
According to Reuters, travelers travel to and from Parachinar in convoys escorted by security officials. The convoy was also traveling with police yesterday.
One of the wounded in the attack, Jamshed Hussain, said that the vehicles in the convoy were shot at from both sides.
“We don’t know them, but they were armed with rifles and stopped the vehicle and started shooting at the passengers from close range,” Hussain said.
Following yesterday’s attack, all markets, educational institutions, transport and other businesses in Parachinar have been closed.
A police officer, who asked not to be named, said that thousands of angry citizens had gathered in the main market and the situation was very tense.
Meanwhile, some images show protesters attacking a police station near the scene of the incident, as the police were powerless and weak in providing security to the people.
In response to this incident, the office of Grand Ayatollah Sistani (may God protect him) issued a message saying: Once again, heartless terrorists have committed a horrific crime and have martyred or injured a large number of innocent believers by carrying out an armed attack on travelers traveling from Parachinar to Peshawar.
While offering condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families, the office emphasized: The Najaf Ashraf Seminary and the Supreme Shiite Authority, by condemning this horrific crime that has targeted the unity of Muslims, strongly urges the Pakistani government to find a solution to protect the defenseless people from the cruelty and crimes of terrorist groups and to take necessary preventive measures, and not to allow innocent believers to be subjected to violent and brutal attacks by extremist and heartless groups every now and then.
