Trump seeks to prosecute US military leaders who were directly involved in the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan
According to published reports, the Trump transition team is preparing a list of former and current senior US military officers who were directly involved in the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in order to put them before a military court.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): NBC News reported that the Trump team is considering the possibility of forming a committee to investigate and review the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021. The American network, citing an official from the country and an informed source, added: The effort will focus on identifying individuals who were directly involved in the decision-making process and will also examine the manner of the US withdrawal, and the intention is to examine whether the military officials involved may face charges including treason.
“They (Trump’s team) are taking this very seriously,” the source said, adding that former Defense Department assistant for global threat intelligence Matt Flynn is helping to advance the effort.
The U.S. presence in Afghanistan, which began in October 2001, ended in 2021 after 20 years with a humiliating withdrawal of U.S. troops. Republican lawmakers blame the Biden administration for the deadly and chaotic U.S. withdrawal and the Kabul airport incidents.
