Khalilzad: There is a possibility of an agreement between Iran and the US during the Trump presidency
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Affairs Zalmay Khalilzad expressed hope for an agreement between Iran and the US during the second Trump administration.
On Tuesday, Khalilzad wrote in a message on the X social network: An agreement between Iran and the US that meets America's vital goals would be better than war and Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
He added, echoing the claims of Western leaders about the nature of Iran's nuclear activities: Of course, this agreement will not be JCPOA 2. Such an agreement must stop Iran's nuclear weapons program and serve American interests, not just postpone it.
Khalilzad also emphasized that the election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States provides an opportunity for such an agreement.
This comment comes while Trump, during his first term in the White House, unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 after much criticism of the US goals and on the pretext that it did not achieve the US goals and was not in the country's interest, and reinstated sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the JCPOA in exchange for restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.
Trump then said that he was seeking to reach a new agreement with Iran, but that never happened, and after the end of his first term in office, he repeatedly claimed that if he returned to the White House, he would very quickly reach an agreement with Tehran.
