The media reported that the European Parliament awarded the European Human Rights Award known as the Sakharov Prize to Edmundo Gonzalez, the fugitive leader of the Venezuelan opposition, and María Corina Machado, a former representative of the country's parliament and one of the opposition politicians.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The Sakharov Human Rights Award was awarded to Edmundo Gonzalez, a fugitive Venezuelan politician, and another female opposition politician from this country.
The Sakharov Prize was created in 1988 after Andrei Sakharov, a physicist from the former Soviet Union and an opponent of this government.
Initially, this award was supposed to be given to individuals or groups who support and defend human rights and fundamental human freedoms, but later the process of awarding this award followed a different path.
According to Fars, the European Human Rights Award was awarded to Gonzalez in a situation where this politician refused to accept the voting results after the announcement of the results of the Venezuelan presidential election and formed protests against the current president of Venezuela and the winner of the election, Nicolas Maduro.
The leader of the Venezuelan opposition fled the country and took refuge in Spain after the issuance of his arrest warrant by one of the Venezuelan courts.
González refused to accept the results of the elections when the National Electoral Council of Venezuela had confirmed the results of these elections.
The European Parliament announced that the award was given to González and Machado because these two politicians represent the people of Venezuela who are fighting for the "restoration of freedom and democracy".
