Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the country's army to increase the number of its soldiers by 180,000 to a total of 1.5 million active soldiers.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the country's army to increase the number of its soldiers by 18,000 to a total of 1.5 million active soldiers. China becomes the second largest army in the world.

This decree, published on the official website of the government, will come into effect on December 1. This decree says that the number of armed forces is going to increase to 2.38 million people.

According to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading military think tank, such an increase would leave Russia with more active combat troops than the United States and India, and the country's military second only to China. According to the IISS, Beijing has just over 2 million active duty service personnel.

The order marks the third time Putin has raised the ranks of the military since launching his all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and comes as Russian forces advance in eastern Ukraine and try to drive Ukrainian forces out of the region.

In June, Putin announced the number of troops participating in the battle in Ukraine to be nearly 700,000.

After calling up 300,000 reservists in the face of a Ukrainian counteroffensive in late 2022, Russia is relying on recruiting volunteer soldiers lured by relatively high wages.
