Canadian Georgette Ganyon appointed as political deputy of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)

The United Nations has appointed Canadian Georgette Ganyon as the political deputy of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).


Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced that Canadian Georges Ganyon has been appointed as the political deputy of the Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
 
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Ms. Georgette Ganyon to replace Marcus Potzel.
 
Since 2021, Ms. Georgette Ganyon has served as the UN Deputy Special Representative for Libya and Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator.
 
Ms. Ganion has worked for more than 28 years in the fields of peace, human rights, humanitarian aid and development in war-torn and post-conflict countries.
 
Ganion replaces Marcus Potzel, who was recently appointed as German ambassador to Iran.
 
He is a Canadian citizen and previously served as UNAMA's human rights director in Kabul from 2010 to 2015.
 
Marcus Potzel was a German diplomat who had always met with Afghan women businessmen and supported the inclusive government in Afghanistan.
