America: We cannot confirm the exact number of evacuees from Afghanistan

25 Jul 2024 - 9:45

The Department of Inspection of the US State Department published a report on Wednesday, July 24, and said that it could not confirm the exact number of people who were transferred out of Afghanistan by this country in 2021.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to the Voice of America, the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken published a statement in September 2021 saying that the US government and its partners will send about 124 thousand people out of Afghanistan in August 2021.

On the second anniversary of the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defense, mentioned the departure of more than 115,000 Afghan citizens from the country.

Now, the Department of Inspection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that this ministry has generally relied on the information of the Ministry of Defense in providing figures, because it was responsible for carrying out the mission of evacuating civilians in Afghanistan.

This directorate said that documents were requested from the Ministry of Defense to recount the number of evacuees, but the Pentagon did not provide a complete answer until the publication of this report, and even though it assured about the existence of the information, the inspection directorate could not obtain these documents.

During the evacuation mission in August 2021, the responsibility of the US Department of State in Hamid Karzai's international arena included the evaluation of evacuation applicants and their movement in the queues.

It is stated in this report that during the evacuation mission at the airport, the US embassy officials said that the Ministry of Defense was responsible for identifying the evacuation flights.

However, the US Department of State's Department of Inspection has said that officials of the Crisis Management and Strategy Department of the Evacuation Mission Center have told this department that they have not seen any list of people who were evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021.

According to the report of the Directorate of Inspection, the US State Department has continued to evacuate special visa applicants, US citizens and other eligible Afghans from Afghanistan and has kept the records of these people after the end of the evacuation mission.

According to these records, from September 2021 to December 2023, the US State Department transferred 35,171 people, including 1971 US citizens and 2,1925 Afghans who had special immigration visas and applicants for this type of visa, out of Afghanistan.

The US State Department has also reported that until May 28, 2024, it has transferred 1974 family members of transferred children to this country under the Family Reunification Program.

The US Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on this report. But in 2021, he had approved the evacuation of 124,000 people from Afghanistan.
