Student protests continue in Bangladesh

25 Jul 2024 - 9:31

Thousands of Bangladeshi students armed with sticks and stones once again clashed with armed police forces and brought the street protests to a new stage of violence.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Bangladeshi protesters, a large part of whom were students, demanded an end to the quota system for government jobs in street demonstrations in recent days.

A few days after the protests, Bangladesh's Supreme Court canceled the controversial recruitment plan. According to the Bangladesh government's plan, more than half of the country's employment positions, equivalent to 56 percent, were to be reserved for some special groups, including veterans and war wounded.

Clashes between protesters and Bangladeshi security forces have left at least 155 people dead and thousands injured. Thousands of people have also been arrested and protesting students have said that they plan to continue protesting until the arrested leaders of these protests are released.

Allocating quota of government jobs to the children and descendants of Bangladeshi independence war veterans from Pakistan has launched a wave of street protests led by students in this country.

The protests started at Dhaka University, the capital of this country, and later spread to other universities and cities in Bangladesh, until street rallies led to the blocking of railways and roads.

According to this law, family members participating in Bangladesh's war of independence from Pakistan are entitled to 30% of government jobs.

Inequality is widening in urban areas of Bangladesh. In a country of 170 million people, more than 30 million people are not working or studying.
