The Biden administration has faced international criticism for supporting Israel in the face of mounting civilian casualties

13 Jul 2024 - 9:36

The President of the United States told reporters in a press conference on Thursday (July 11) that the war in Gaza should end now and Israel should not occupy this area after the end of the war. He added that the framework of his ceasefire plan has been agreed upon by Israel and Hamas, but there are still gaps.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to Reuters, Joe Biden said about his ceasefire plan for the Gaza war: "This framework is now agreed upon by Israel and Hamas. So, I sent my team to the area to check the details."

In late May, Biden outlined a three-step proposal aimed at achieving a ceasefire, exchanging Israeli prisoners for Palestinian prisoners, withdrawing Israel from Gaza and rebuilding the besieged territory.

Bill Burns, the head of the CIA and Brett McGurk, the US special envoy in the Middle East, met with their counterparts in the region to discuss the ceasefire agreement.

Hamas has accepted a key part of the US plan and has asked Washington to commit Israel to a permanent ceasefire before signing the deal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the agreement should not prevent Israel from resuming its military campaign until its war goals are achieved. On Wednesday, Netanyahu's office announced that he was committed to guaranteeing a cease-fire agreement in Gaza, provided Israel's red lines were respected.

The Biden administration has faced international criticism for supporting Israel in the face of mounting civilian casualties. The United States has seen months of domestic protests against the Gaza war and US support for Israel.

Dozens of US government officials have resigned due to opposition to Biden's policy towards this war. Human rights activists have also expressed concern about the rise of Islamophobia in the United States.
