Indian Foreign Ministry: America understands the importance of Chabahar port for humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

19 May 2024 - 9:53

Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, has repeated the words of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Subramaniam Jaishankar, that the project of equipping the Chabahar port is for the benefit of the entire region. It understands the provision of economic alternatives to this country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Chabahar project is more important in terms of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

This matter was reported by Times of India on Saturday, 29th of Thor, quoting Jaiswal.

He added that this project will benefit the entire region, especially landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia.

He has stated that America understands the importance of Chabahar port for continuing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and providing economic alternatives to this country.

"I want to reiterate what [Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar] said earlier, that we should not be narrow minded," he added.

According to Jaiswal, India's commitment to the Chabahar Port is to realize its potential as a communication hub for landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India pointed out that since 2018, New Delhi has provided humanitarian aid including 85 thousand metric tons of wheat, 200 metric tons of pulses and 40 thousand liters of insecticide to Afghanistan through this port.

Last week, the agreement to equip and develop Chabahar port was signed between the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran and India.

This is despite the fact that earlier, sources in the Indian Foreign Ministry downplayed the statements of the US Foreign Ministry spokesperson about the India-Iran agreement and said that he was not fully aware of the facts.

It should be mentioned that during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Iran 8 years ago, a tripartite agreement was signed by India, Iran and Afghanistan to create an international transport and transit corridor (Chabahar Agreement).

"Abdul Salam Javad Akhundzadeh", the spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the country, had previously said that most of Afghanistan's exports and imports take place through Iran's Chabahar port, therefore, it is not 100% dependent on any of the neighboring countries.

Chabahar port is of special importance for Afghanistan. Because in recent years, Pakistan has used the port of Karachi, which is the most important sea transit route used by Afghanistan, as a lever.

Last year, around 3,000 containers belonging to the country's businessmen were seized in Karachi port for months.

Last year, during his visit to Chabahar port, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the economic deputy of the prime minister's office, asked the Islamic Republic of Iran to facilitate Afghanistan's access to this port so that the country's goods can be easily exported to international markets.
